Letter 5 (2015-2016)

                                                                                                    28 September 2015
Dear Parents,
Last week we continued to talk about our feelings and rooms in the house.  In addition to feeling happy, sad, and surprised, we talked about feeling angry, afraid and tired.  We sang the song “If You’re Happy” but added other feelings to the song.  Some of us liked the part when we sang “if you’re sad” as we could make crying sounds; while others liked the part when we sang “if you’re surprised” as we could say “oh, o.”  We also looked in the mirror and tried to make these facial expressions.  In the math centre we sorted out pictures of people with different facial expressions.
When talking about rooms in the house, we focused on the bedroom.  We brought out the nap bed and looked at different kinds of beddings such as a pillow, a blanket and a bed sheet.  Then we pretended to sleep on the bed.  Most of us agreed to lie down on the bed, while some felt a bit reluctant and only wanted to watch.  We also talked about the kind of furniture that can be found in the bedroom such as a dresser, a lamp, and a wardrobe which led us into our new topic on clothes.
We pretended to open the wardrobe and found different kinds of clothes such as shirts, trousers, blouses, skirts, hats and so forth.  We had lots of fun trying on different kinds of clothes.  We learned the words that are used to call different kinds of clothes.  After trying on the clothes, we learned that when our clothes are dirty, we need to wash them and hung them up to dry.  To reinforce these new words, in the art centre, we painted pictures of different kinds of clothes which we then used them to make a picture of clothes being hung on the clothes line.  We also glued pictures of different kinds of clothes in our wardrobes.  To strengthen our small muscles, we practiced manipulating the clothes pegs.  Some of us found it to be rather tricky.  We were not quite sure how to fasten the clothe pegs on to the line.  We also practiced buttoning the buttons with our special buttoning snake.

This week we will be talking about clothes used for different kinds of weather.  We will start to talk about clothes that are used on a hot or on a summer day.  If you have any old clothes and accessories that can be lent to the classroom such as sunglasses, raincoats, boots, wooly hats, scarves, mittens, etc., please bring them in for us to use for our class discussion and for dressing up.  Please do not send in any valuable items.

                                                                             Best Regards,

                                                                             Ms. Marizon

Letter 4 (2015-2016)

21 September 2015
Dear Parents,
As we have been having lots of rain last week, we didn’t really get a chance to play in the playground as often as we should.  Fortunately it didn’t rain when we had our water play as the children showed that they started to feel bored being able to only play inside the building.
Last week we started to talk about feelings.  After reading the story “Things I Like”, we talked about things we d and disliked.  We were all able to tell what we liked to play with.  Most of us liked to play with cars, while others liked to play with the ball, play dough, the magnifying glass, etc.   It then led us into talking about feelings.  We emphasized on feeling happy, sad and surprised.  We compared these feelings, and in the math centre we played a matching game by matching pictures of people who have the same feeling.   In the art centre we made a feeling wheel which we will be taking home soon.
Last week we also continued to talk about rooms in the house.  We focused on the kitchen.    We looked at different cooking utensils such as pots, pans, spatulas, measuring cups, measuring spoons, etc.  In addition, we looked at the big electrical appliances such as the oven, microwave, stove, refrigerator, etc.  After observing the masher we made mashed potato in Cooking.  We really tried hard to mash the potato into small pieces until it was soft.  We were thrilled to get to use the electric beater for the first time.  Some of us were a bit scared, but after holding the beater for a few seconds, we hardly wanted to let go.  We also used cooking utensils to make art pieces.  We used the salad spinner, rolling pin and masher to make different kinds of pictures.  It was fun.  With the salad spinner we had to figure out how to turn the spinner around.  Some of us found it harder than others as we had to turn the salad spinner handle in the right direction.  Because of the rain, during Sensory play, we played with sand dough in the classroom.  We were so excited.  If we did not make shapes, we pummeled the sand dough with our hands till it was all mushy.  The texture of sand dough was certainly different from play dough.
This week we will continue to talk about other feelings such as angry, frightened and tired.  We will also talk about the bedroom which will lead us into our new theme on “Clothes.”  We will be looking at different kinds of clothes, their use, and clothes use in different seasons.  It should be another interesting topic for all of us.

                                                                   Best Regards,

                                                                   Ms. Marizon

Letter 3 (2515-2516)

14 September 2015

Dear Parents,

Thank you for the family photos that you have sent.  We have been taking turns showing our family photos to our friends.  Some of us could tell who the people in the photos were, while others preferred to look at the photos by themselves.
Last week we continued our discussion on people in our family.  We talked about grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles.  Unless it was one’s aunt or uncle, most of us found it rather hard to identify pictures of aunts and uncles as they look similar to fathers and mothers.  Grandparents were of course easier to identify.  In the math centre, we sorted and matched pictures of family members.  In the art centre we glued family member dolls that we had made earlier on our house picture which are now up on the board in front of the Snack/Lunch room.
Last week we also talked about rooms in the house.  We started with the bathroom.  After looking at pictures of items found in the bathroom, we visited our own bathroom and talked about using the toilet.  We then talked about keeping clean and taking care of our teeth.  We learned how to brush our teeth, and will be practicing a few more times before we return the toothbrushes.   In the art centre, we did toothbrush painting.  Instead of using a paint brush to paint our tooth shape paper, we used a toothbrush.  We also made a picture of our teeth.  We had to cut the teeth and placed them on the assigned spots.  Some of us were very careful at placing one tooth on each spot while others preferred to put lots of teeth all over the mouth.  Did you see our “apple teeth?”  We made it in Cooking.  Some of us couldn’t resist but eat a few pieces of apple before starting to make the “apple teeth” while the ones who love marshmallow tried to put lots of marshmallow on the apple till there was no more space.
This week we will be looking at the kitchen.  We will be looking at some cooking utensils that we can find in the kitchen.  We will also start to talk about our feelings; starting with happy and sad.
Because of the heavy rain last Thursday we had to postpone our water play from Thursday to Friday.  In the future, if the weather does not permit, the children’s swimsuits will be kept at school, and we may then move our water play to another day in the week.

                                                                             Best Regards,

                                                                             Ms. Marizon

Letter 2 (2015-2016)

7 September 2015

Dear Parents,
It was the children’s second week of school, and the week that they started to realize that coming to school and being away from their love ones was a permanent routine.  Many of us have stated to adjust, while others may need a little more time.  Some of us now only cry when you leave while others may cry when you pick them up in order to tell you how much they miss you.  However, towards the end of the week, everybody in the class was certainly starting to settle down.  Smiles could be seen and sometimes laughter could be heard.  We have started to open up to each other, know one another and bond together.
Last week we started our theme on “Our Family”.  Thank you for the photos that you had sent.  We showed the photos to our friends, and tried to tell our friends who the people in the photos were.  We began our discussion by talking about our immediate family.  We looked at pictures of families and learned that a family consists of people who live with us, and that a family can be big or small.   Then we talked about the jobs our parents do while we are at school.  We saw pictures of mummies and daddies doing house work and office work.
In the art centre we made our family member dolls.  While making our dolls we talked about the body parts of the dolls.  We named the parts of the face such as the eyes, nose, mouth and ears.  Then we made clothes for our dolls, and also learned the words used for different kinds of clothes.  Depending on the number of the members in our families, some of us took longer to finish all our dolls.  While talking about jobs our parents do, we also pretended to be our parents cleaning the house and washing clothes.  We had lots of fun washing the clothes with water and soap.  Some of us didn’t want to stop as there were lots of bubbles in the tub.  We had our first Cooking activity last week.  We were excited to make our rice cake face.  Some of us tried hard to make the rice cake look like a face with eyes, nose and mouth, while others were happy to just sprinkle lots of raisins on the rice cake.
This week we will be talking about our extended family such as our grandparents, aunts and uncles.  We will also be talking about our house and rooms in our house starting with the bathroom.  Please let your child bring a toothbrush to school this week so that we can practice brushing our teeth while we talk about activities in the bathroom.  For those who were not able to come to the school’s Parent Orientation last week, I would like to inform you that every week you can also find our class’ weekly class letter together with a few class photos on the nursery class blog which can be found on the school’s website.

                                                                             Best Regards,

                                                                             Ms. Marizon
