Letter 10 (2017-18)

6 November 2017
Dear Parents,
Happy belated Loy Krathong Day.  Did you go anywhere for Loy Krathong?  Thank you for the flowers that you had brought to our class last Friday.  We used them to make our krathongs (flower float).  Before making our krathongs, we smelled the flowers and discovered which ones had a pleasant fragrance and which ones did not.  We also looked at banana leaves and banana stomps as they are used to make traditional krathongs in Thailand.  We practiced our tearing skills with the banana leaves, and used the leaves to beautify our krathongs.  We decorated our krathongs whichever way wanted and when we had finished, we took them to the swimming pool to float.  Did the krathongs still float when you floated them again at night?
Last week we started to talk about people around us.  We branched off from our family to community helpers whom we see around us.  We looked at pictures of police officers and saw that police officers in different countries wore police uniforms in different colours.  After reading several books about police officers, we started to recognise the jobs done by police officers.  We talked about why police officers needed to arrest people who steal or hurt other people.  Then we looked at the tools used by police officers such as handcuffs, torch, walkie talkie, etc.  We talked on a real walkie-talkie with the staff who work in the front office.  We were so surprised when we heard their voices!  We also used the magnifying glass to look at things around the classroom and saw that everything became bigger.  In the math centre, we printed our fingerprints and counted them.  Later on we talked about traffic police and road safety.  We learned that when we see the red light we needed to stop, go slow when we saw the amber light and go fast when we saw the green light.  We then pretended to be police officers directing the traffic by showing the different coloured lights to our friends and conducting them to stop or go.
This week we will be talking about fire fighters.  On Thursday 9 of November, the fire fighters will come to visit us.  It will certainly be an exciting experience for all of us.
                                                                                                Best Regards,

                                                                                                Ms. Marizon
