Letter 29 (2017-18)

7 May 2018
Dear Parents,
For the past two weeks, we have been looking at land transportation.
Last week the Kindergarten class invited us to join them in visiting cars and vans brought to the parking lot by some of their parents.  We were very excited when we got to see a real car and a real van.  We looked around the car and van and saw the side mirror, lights, tail lights, wipers, doors, etc.  Then we went into the car and van, and sat in the passenger seats.  We compared the van to the car and saw that the van was bigger than the car, and could carry more things inside.  We also saw pick-up trucks in the parking lot, and so we talked about delivery trucks.  In the pretend play centre, we pretended to be truck drivers; delivering parcels to our friends in the classroom.
During the week we talked about road signs and traffic signals.  We pretended to ride in cars and played a game of stop and go with the red light and the green light.  We had to learn to look and listen to the instructions of stopping and going.   Some of us found it to be quite hard as we mainly wanted to run.  We talked about why we should always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road, and that we always need to look at both sides of the road before crossing.  As we had been talking about bicycles and motorcycles, last week we also talked about bicycle safety and why one should wear a helmet.  We tried on helmets and learned the right way to put on a helmet.
By the end of the week, we started to talk about trains.  We learned that there are different kinds of trains such as a passenger train and a freight train.  We also learned that there’s the train engine and the carriages to carry people.  We compared trains to cars and discovered that while cars can move on roads, trains need to move on train tracks.  We also looked at other vehicles that move on tracks such as trams.  In the art centre, we started to make our 3D train from boxes.  We can then play with our trains when we have finished making them.
This week we will continue to talk about trains before we start to talk about air transportation.  We will be talking about the airport, people working with planes and different kinds of air transportation.  It should be another fun week for all of us.
                                                                             Best Regards,
                                                                             Ms. Marizon
