Letter 30 (2018-19)

7 May 2019
Dear Parents,
It had been a rather hot week last week, and so our discussion about the wind was a great topic for us to explore as we were able to carry out experiments about the wind in many ways including fanning ourselves to make us feel cool.
Wind is actually a rather complicated concept for us to understand as we cannot see wind.  Hence, to understand wind, we experimented feeling the wind and creating wind in different ways. We went out to the playground and discussed that although the sun was hot, but if there was a breeze, we did not feel the heat that much. Fanning ourselves with the fan that we had made helped to cool our bodies from the heat.   To feel the wind we fanned ourselves and noticed that the wind from the fan was nice and cool especially after we came back into the classroom.  We then compared it to the wind from the hairdryer and could immediately feel that the wind from the hairdryer was hot.  Hence, we learned that our bodies could feel either hot, cool or cold wind.  To be able to see the wind, we held ribbons under the fan and observed how the ribbons moved when the fan was turned on and off.  We then tried turning the fan on at different speed levels and noticed that the wind could be soft or strong.  Of course we all wanted the fan to be turned on at full speed!  In the art centre we made windsocks which are now hanging in our classroom.  We enjoyed watching it sway this and that way.  We also made wind blowers and experimented blowing with our wind blowers, and blowing with windmills.  Some of us started to notice that if we blew hard the windmill spun very fast, but when we blew softly, the windmill spun slowly and stopped rather quickly.  We then read the story “The Three Little Pigs” and tried to blow down houses.  In the art centre, we painted by using a straw to blow water colour paint this and that way.  Some of us had really strong lungs and could blow the paint from one side of the paper to the other, others who found it hard to blow opted to tilt the paper and watched while the paint flowed from one side to the other.
This week we will end our discussion about the wind by talking about activities that can be done on windy days.  We will then start to talk about clouds and rain.  If you have any clothes and accessories that are used on rainy days such as boots, small umbrellas, raincoats, please let your child bring them in this week to show and share with their friends.

                    Best Regards,
