Letter 13 (2017-18)

                                                                                                       26 November 2017

Dear Parents,

Time is certainly moving by quickly and we are now approaching the end of November.  However, it seems that the cool weather hasn’t approached us yet, and it has been quite hot on some days.  Hence, when the children hear the word “water play”, everyone becomes excited and wants to be changed into their swimsuits right away.
It was a rather busy week for us last week as we had our photos taken individually, as a class and as a school.  Although there were only eight of us, but with us little people, it certainly took the photographer a long time before he was able to capture our photos.  Some of us were ready to give big smiles while others did not want to give even the tiniest smile.  The photographer really got to exercise as he had to run after some of us who did not want to stop at all.
Last week we started to talk about the work of a postman.  We looked at pictures of postmen around the world in uniforms of different colours.  We also saw how hard working postmen were in order to deliver letters and parcels to people.  We saw pictures of postmen working in the sun, the rain and the snow.  We also saw pictures of postmen using different kinds of transportation to deliver letters whether it was by feet, by bicycle, by motorcycle, by truck and even by boat!  In the book centre, we read books about postmen and saw that a postman’s job could be quite dangerous especially with dogs!  In the art centre, we made our postman or postwoman dolls.  We also made a postman’s hat and a letter box.  We will be putting our letter boxes in front of the classroom.  Please write to us.  You can put your letter into our letter boxes.  We will be so thrilled to receive letters from you.
Last week we also started our practice for the Christmas concert.  We will be singing and doing actions to a few songs.  So far we have been quite good at doing the actions and have started to sing along.
This week we will continue to talk about the postman and will start to make Christmas decorations for our performance and for the classroom.  We will also be practicing our performance with the other classes.  Hopefully, we will not be startled by all the bigger children from the other EY and KS1 classes.

                                                                                         Best Regards,

Letter 12 (2017-18)

20 November 2017
Dear Parents,
Last week we talked about a job that is very close to our lives and that is a chef or a cook.  Before exploring the work of a chef, we tried to think of the person who cooks food for us to eat at home.  Then we tried to think of the person who cooks food for us when we go to restaurants.  We then compared things that are edible and non-edible before discussing about healthy and unhealthy food.
Thank you for all the fruits and vegetables that you had brought for us.  Fruits and vegetables were part of our discussion on healthy food.  We spent the whole week looking and tasting different kinds of fruits and vegetables.  We learned that fruits and vegetables can have different names.  At first some of us were reluctant to try vegetables.  However, once a friend volunteered to try, others started to take a bite.  If was certainly great to see everyone try even the smallest bite.  Some of us who has never eaten any kind of vegetables at lunch time also tried and would sometimes even ask for more!  We then talked about different ways in cooking vegetables and learned that most vegetables can be eaten fresh like a salad.  In the art centre we made bowls of salad.  We also made beautiful pictures from the salad spinner.  Instead of painting with paintbrushes, we drop different colours of paint in the salad spinner before spinning it as hard as we could.  We were so surprised to see our pictures when we opened the lid.  Later on, we learned that another way of cooking vegetables was to boil them and so in Cooking we made vegetable soup.  We all worked hard in cutting the vegetables into small pieces.
This week we will be talking about the postman and the post office.  After we make our letter boxes, please write to us.  We will surely be excited to receive mail from you.  This week we will also be having our photos taken.  On Tuesday we will have our individual and class photo taken, and on Wednesday we will have our whole school photo taken.  Please send in an extra set of uniform and white socks on these two days in case we get our clothes dirty for any reason before our photo is taken.
                                                                                      Best Regards,

                                                                                      Ms. Marizon

Letter 11 (2017-18)

13 November 2017
Dear Parents,

Last week was was certainly a week full of excitement.  We had a lot of fun last week talking about fire fighters, fire trucks, and the fire station.  We looked at pictures of fire, and learned that when there is a fire, we need to call the fire station so that the fire fighters could come and help put out the fire.  We then pretended to be fire fighters doing various activities.  At the writing centre, we used markers to draw fire, and put out the fire by erasing the flames.
We also traced lines to take the fire fighters to the fire engines.  In the art centre we made fire trucks from tissue boxes.  We painted the colour of fire by stamping red and yellow paint and observed how the colour mixed to become orange flames.  We also learned about fire safety.  We learned that fire is hot and that we should not touch anything hot whether it is a stove, oven, iron, or matches.
On Thursday the fire fighters brought their fire trucks to visit us at school.  Some of us were very excited while others were a bit scared at first.  We listened to the fire fighter explain about the different kinds of equipment that they use to put out fire.  The excitement started when we had the chance to sit on the fire truck.  We were delighted to go on this very big truck.  We pretended to be fire fighters driving the fire truck and talked on the walkie talkie. The part that we enjoyed the most was when we could hold the long hose to squirt out water.   Some of us did not want to let go of the hose!  Therefore, during water play, we got to put out the fire by pouring water on pictures of fire around the pool.  We also used the chalk to draw fire on the pavements, and observed how it disappeared when we poured water on it.
This week we will be talking about chefs and bakers.  As part of being a chef we will be talking about food especially healthy food.  Please let your child bring in some fruits and vegetables such as apples, grapes, cucumber, cabbage, corn, peas, etc. to share with their friends.  We will taste and observe different kinds of vegetables and fruits.
                                                                                                Best Regards,

                                                                                                                        Ms. Marizon
