Letter 5 (2019-20)

Dear Parents,
It was quite a busy week last week.  In the classroom we started our new topic on clothes, and in school, we did activities for STEM week which stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.”

In the classroom we started to talk about clothes. First we talked about clothes that we wear every day. We learned that different kinds of clothes have different names, and even clothes that look the same can be called differently in different countries. As we had made our body dolls earlier in the month, it was now the time to put clothes on them. We then looked at pictures of different places in the world and discussed how we should pack our suitcases when we traveled to a cold place and a hot place. As our STEM activities focused on ice, we first took a trip to a cold place.  We looked at pictures of ice and snow and then chose the clothes that would help keep us warm such as mittens, socks, coats, jackets, tights, etc. Thank you for sending in the winter clothes, we took turns trying
them on and pretended that we were in a cold place.

As for STEM, it was quite a fun learning experience for all of us.  In Nusery, we talked about ice.  It certainly went well with our discussion on winter clothes. To understand ice, we looked at water and explored the freezer. We noticed that the freezer was cold. We made trays of water to put in the freezer while we left one cup outside. After a day we checked the freezer and found that the water in the freezer had turned into ice while the one left outside was still the same. We then touched and played with ice and found that it was very cold. We watched video clips of polar bears and to understand why polar bears did not feel cold like we did, we did a blubber experiment with shortening.  Apart from that we painted with ice and enjoyed watching the ice melt while the colours spread around. We also helped rescue sea animals from the ice.  It was the most popular activity when learning about ice.  It was certainly great to see all of you during our STEM presentation and hopefully you also had fun exploring with your children.

This Week

This week we will talk about clothes for a hot day.  If you have any summer clothes or accessories such as sunglasses, hats, fans, that we can use for dressing up please bring them in.   We will return them to you at the end of the weekPlease take note that the class blog will only be published till the end of this month.  After that our weekly class letters will appear on the parent portal.

                                                                                        Warm Regards,
